Obama Says YOU WILL VOLUNTEER

http://www.govtrack.us/congress/bill.xpd?bill=h111-1388

Called the Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act, also known as the "Generations Invigorating Volunteerism and Education (GIVE) Act, is an Act to reauthorize and reform the national service laws. And was signed into law by President Obama on April 21, 2009.

Kelley Vlahos of Fox News reported that it is the most sweeping reform of nationally-backed volunteer programs since AmeriCorps.

But some opponents were strongly criticizing the bill before it ever left the House, she said, and were, and still are, calling it expensive indoctrination and forced advocacy.

The GIVE Act has an operating budget of $6 billion over five years, with $1.3 billion for the Corporation for National and Community Service which already oversees AmeriCorps and its existing $260 million budget.

The act would create 175,000 "new service opportunities," more than doubling the number of participants in AmeriCorps. It would also expand volunteerism into new sectors, including a Clean Energy Corps, Education Corps, Healthy Futures Corps and Veterans Service Corps and it expands the National Civilian Community Corps to focus on additional areas like disaster relief and energy conservation.

Rep. Joe Wilson (R-SC) opposed HR 1388 in committee, questioning the utility of the cash-strapped federal government making such huge investments in what should be community-inspired projects and programs.

The bill's opponents say young "volunteers" could be forced into service since the bill creates a "Congressional Commission on Civic Service," tasked with exploring a number of topics, including "whether a workable, fair and reasonable mandatory service requirement for all able young people could be developed and how such a requirement could be implemented in a manner that would strengthen the social fabric of the nation."

"The act will leave no student, or senior behind and no one in between," wrote Judi McLeod at CFP.

In case you think the Corps means everybody but you, HR1388 also offers "increasing service opportunities for our Nation’s retiring professionals" and "members of the Baby Boom generation."

Kinda seems like Obama wants everybody made in his image in a plan that enshrines the "community organizer" as part of the U.S. pop culture.

But members 'PRESSED' into the service of the 1+ million-strong Youth Brigade, sanctioned by "Generations Invigorating Volunteerism and Education (GIVE), will have none of the freedoms of the community organizer who started it all.

Because, by the way, there’s no room for God in Obama’s long promised Youth Brigade, no room to protest, petition, to boycott or to support a strike, and and loopholes to give its mandatory membership a pass.

Everybody in GIVE will follow the rules and you can bet next year’s crops that the letter O will most likely be somewhere on this 'Volunteer Army’s' uniforms.

Who exactly will be 'PRESSED' into the Obama army of community organizers?

Obama’s plan requires anyone receiving school loans, among others to serve as part of the brigade.

Lofty in intent, the GIVE Act aims to "leverage investments to increase State, local, business and philanthropic resources to address national and local challenges", but is very specific in what its members can and cannot do.

According to Voice magazine; "The Bill would forbid any student in the brigade to participate in "engaging in religious instruction or worship, constructing or operating facilities devoted to religious instruction or worship, maintaining facilities primarily or inherently devoted to religious instruction or worship, or engaging in any form of religious proselytization,"

The new law also describes in the "Youth Engagement Zone Program" how "service learning" will be "a mandatory part of the curriculum in all of the secondary schools served by the local educational agency."

Yep, just gotta LOVE that MANDATORY VOLUNTEERING thing.

Not to sound too childish, I got just two words for them, Make Me.

Better than my old standby of I gots 2 words for ya and they ain't happy birthday.

If they want people to do mandatory 'volunteering' maybe they should bring back the draft and everyone does a couple years in the Military.

  • Funny that the ONLY one's calling it a 'lie' are the koolaid drinking liberals.

Ya really need to quit mainlining that chit. It ain't heroin.

Didn't say it was not my 'argument'.

I stated she wrote the piece, dug up the facts, and that I along with quite a few other people, including lawyers and congressmen, agree with the facts she presented and all have the same issues with the law and the wording in the law.

IF you read the entire law, which I actually doubt, but for sake of argument, IF you read the entire law, then the only problem is, you simply fail to understand what was written.

Which to be honest, is no shame. The lawmakers seem to take distinct pride in shoving as much legalese into a law as they think they can get away with.

It's why I not only read the entire law, and researched the law, and sent it to an attorney (an experienced USSC attorney), along with a couple of former legislators I know.

Oh, and I am NEVER left 'speechless'. If my Mama couldn't ever get me to shut up, you think some looser liberal whose mainlining koolaid like there is no tomorrow can shut me up, pleeese, you need to get a life.

I happen to have a 'life' outside of these forums. Try it, ya might learn something, like this Messiah of yours ain't all he's cracked up to be.

By the way, Shadows, I took the quote from the main article, not directly from the Voice Mag. I looked at it, saw it was the same as the main article, but neglected to keep the Voice link. My bad, I should have kept the Voice link. My apologies, my fault there.

However, all this does boil down to 'interpretation'. Guess the same reason so many laws go to the Supreme Court, over interpretation.

Seems most liberals are interpreting it in of course, the most liberal of ways, saying it does not mean what it says, and the Conservatives are interpreting as meaning what it says, and possibly worse.

And that my friends, is why we have so damn many lawyers. Because politicians who are most often lawyers, get diarrhea of the mouth and put all this legal bullchit into a law, instead of using plain English.

Suffice to say, until it gets brought into court, I do not think either side of this issue is gonna be able to declare a winner. And either way, the only real losers to this fight, will once again, be We The People.

  • Yeah, its the koolaid that has me with my shit together....so, it all of a sudden didn't become your argument because you were quoting someone else? What a cop out...and, and the classic, "I'm neither party" rebuttal...good one..as you can clearly see, is that I was rebutting your counter, not your post..then you are supposed to counter, but I guess you were left speechless for a change....

And, the ONLY people that are clamoring, and even talking about this "mandatory" service thing are all conservatives that didn't bother looking at the wording of the bill.....you called out for someone to actually read it, I did, and called you out on the lie...its pretty much that simple.

I guess you really hate it when a damn dirty liberal has actually done his homework, huh?

  • Tattoo, I didn't think that you would need a link to Voice Magazine since you took a quote from it, but here is the link for your perusal.

  • First, lay off the koolaid dude. Your head is swimming.

Apparently you never noticed, in the original post, a majorty of what was written, was by a reporter Kelley Vlahos of Fox News.

Now the way I read, numerous reporters, the way several attorneys read,  and even several Congressmen all read, is the MANDATORY aspect of this is an issue. A Major Issue.

And just because a majority of people do not trust this Messiah and his socialist type policies, and because koolaid drinkers like yourself seem to think the rest of us, plus lawyers, congressment, reporters and everyday folks, are all "paranoid and crazy" doesn't actually mean they (the federal government) are not doing, or trying to do, everything you refuse to see.

By the way, don't lump me in with the Republicans, since I am not a republican. Nor am I a democrat. And I really do not appreciate being insulted by being called either of those.

  • Oh, so now because the word mandatory is in there, the jump in logic is that eventually everyone is going to be forced to serve? Do you hear how crazy that sounds? Really, do you say some of this stuff out loud before you write it? Cause it sounds a bit paranoid and crazy.....just stating that they are looking for some input on how to get a possible fair system in place for possible mandatory service for those that RECEIVE benefits...not just any Joe Schmoe, mind you, but those that actually receive something....aren't you Republicans into that "NO FREE LUNCH" thing?...and that still isn't the point....you are saying that this bill requires you to serve...AND IT DOES NOT STATE THAT AT ALL!!!....did you get that? You said that its mandatory in the bill, it is not.....and then your argument turns to intent....2 completely different things......I went the the bar INTENDING to get laid....does that make getting laid mandatory?????.....didn't think so

If you want to talk about intent, then the intent of this bill is to get more people involved in volunteer work...and you can receive benefits to do it.....
