Read any good books lately?

Have you read any good books during the past year which you would recommend to others for their reading lists?

If so, how about listing their titles and authors with a brief description of each.

  • Science as a Candle in the Dark by Carl Sagan.  You asked about some science books and this is one of my older favorites, although it's theme is more critical thinking or the lack thereof.  Fundamentalist would probably reject it out of hand.  As anyone would if they are of fixed mind.

The Elegant Universe by Brian Greene is astounding.  As I read it I was in awe...when I put it down, I didn't understand what he was talking about.  Reality/the universe is very, very mysterious and it is utterly fascinating to read by "them that's doing" what they think is going on.

Anything Frank Wilczek has written would surely be worthwhile although I have yet to read any of his books.  You can see his lectures (along with many other fascinating folks) at: http://mitworld.mit.edu Among his more esoteric ideas is that quarks and gluons, essentilaly massless, create protons in atomic nucleii that in turn is responsible for mass.  I think sometime soon the term "mass" will have to be replaced.  This "dependent origination" is a 2600 year old Buddhist concept...Everything seems to tie in.  Nothing is "separate"...

  • Leviathan- a 2004 book by I think his name is Bolick.  I believe it's a Cato institute book.  About state and local government having more power than the feds and the people.
