  • Breast Cancer Screening

    • From: WOFLweb
    • Description:

The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force, a panel of independent experts, released revamped recommendations this week, including advice that women in their 40s should not have routine mammograms because there is no evidence they improve survival in that age group.

Meanwhile, some U.S. cancer experts and patient advocacy groups are questioning the new guidelines and predict the reduction in routine mammograms among those 40 to 49 will lead to more deaths from breast cancer. The U.S. task force also recommended against routine breast self-examination, saying there is no definitive proof that the practice reduces breast cancer mortality.

    • Description:

Pittsburgh's mayor says he wants to impose a 1 percent tax on tuition paid by students at the city's seven colleges and universities.  The proposed "college education privilege" tax would generate roughly $16 million from students who use a variety of city services.

Critics say the tax isn't chump change for students and could impact the city's appeal to potential students in the future.  Individual student cost of the tax plan, which comes as Pittsburgh is facing a $15 million budget gap, could range from $20 to $400, depending on the college and tuition costs.
